Riding for Charity - Newfoundland & Labrador

RFS 2009 Report

First, let us thank all the riders and passengers who came out to support the 2nd annual Ride For Seniors event, there are no successes without your participation. A special thank you to the Draco Knights Motorcycle Club and the Gold Wing Road Riders Association for becoming involved with the Ride For Seniors as the official motorcycle club sponsors for the event, you were a key reason for the financial success of the 2009 ride.

Although the 2nd annual Ride For Seniors did not see an increase in rider participation, the end financial result witnessed an increase of more
than a 40% in revenue over last year's ride. To the left, the committee was comprised of (left to right) Perry Langmead (GWRRA), Colin Patey (Draco Knights), John Hennebury (Draco Knights), Mervyn House (MLR Online),Wade Newman (GWRRA) and missing from photo is Tom King.  As you can imagine, there is a great deal of planning and time that goes into hosting a charity ride event such as the Ride For Seniors;  the 2009 committee believed in the cause and worked tirelessly to ensure it was a success.

As for the ride itself the first riders showed up for registration at around 10:00 am and by 11:10 am, with the blessing of the bikes, the 2009 Ride For Seniors was underway. Th
e ride departed from Tim's on Ropewalk Lane for Cape Spear and although the parade went through the heart of St. John's, the ride went off without a hitch in spite of having no RNC escort. The smooth ride was made possible by the GWRRA ride communication systems and experienced ride captains. Riders remained in formation throughout the ride and are to be commended for their ride skills and commitment to safety. Other than some gusty winds it was the perfect day for riding and with Newfoundland and Labrador offering up some of the best scenery anywhere in Canada, it could not get any better for riding our prized rides.

The after-ride BBQ was a great success and was open to the general public as well. Sales to the general public were nearly $200.00 and after expenses, we profited $100.00 from the BBQ alone. Participants of the ride were provided complementary food tickets while others were charged $1.00 per food and beverage item. Each of the committee members helped with the BBQ and were cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for much of the afternoon.

There was more than $1900.00 raised from registration, in large part due to people like Ms. Shelly Grant who raised $440.00 in pledges. Ms. Grant won the prize for most pledges which included a night for two at the Capital Hotel, two Ride for Seniors tee-shirts along with other items as a part of the 1st prize gift bag. Pledges can make or break a ride and in this case, it helped make the 2009 Ride for Seniors a success. There were lots or prizes donated by various business in the area and much of the afternoon was spent presenting prizes to ride participants. Prizes were awarded to the poker run winners as well as door prize draws that were open to all ride participants. Most of the participants went home with something at the end of the day.

Overall, the 2nd annual Ride for Seniors was a tremendous success, raising nearly $3500.00 for the Seniors Resource Centre and in particular the Friendly Visiting Program. The Friendly Visiting Program is a valuable program that provides social contact to seniors who would otherwise be alone much of the time. The program matches a senior with a reliable volunteer friend who is expected to provide regular visits with the senior for companionship and conversation. Often, the volunteer will take their senior friend out on appointments, grocery shopping or take them to visit other friends but the true focus of the Friendly Visiting Program, more often than not, is to provide consistent and reliable social contact to the seniors. Your valuable contributions to the 2nd annual Ride for Seniors will allow this program to flourish and expand to other seniors in need of this service.

The seniors of Newfoundland and Labrador face many challenges but these challenges are in many cases bridged through the programs and service offered by the Seniors Resource Centre. The Seniors Resource Centre faces many challenges as well, including the high cost of rent which accounts for a large portion of their annual operating budget. The SRC is studying the possibility of building or purchasing a location that will become home to the Seniors Resource Centre and if this project is approved, Mid-Life Riders Online will  be a part of it's success.
Mid-Life Riders Online, Draco Knights and the Gold Wing Road Riders Association are committed to enriching the lives of seniors through the donation of all proceeds from the annual Ride for Seniors Event to the Seniors Resource Centre.
